Made this picture a few weeks ago.  It was taken with a borrowed Nikon D40 digital camera, as I don’t have a digital camera of my own.  I used the light studio on campus, which is decked out with an obscene amount of profoto gear.  It had been several months since the last time I used the light studio and I had the itch to get in there again and mess around.  This is what I came up with.  It’s an homage or parody, it really depends on your own sensibilities, of one of Dorothea Lange’s classics.  Instead I have decided to retell the story with legos.  You can view the original below, which was pulled from here.

I know, I know this is neither lo-fi nor DIY, but it was fun and I thought I’d share it with you, my dear readers.  As you may have noticed there is some photoshop work in this picture.  The ad on the sign has been photoshopped in.  I cut it out from a higher resolution version of the image and played with the levels a bit to get the tones relatively similar.  I could have drawn it in illustrator to make it at least somewhat original (laughable), but that would have been too much work when really I was just looking to have fun for a few hours.

I have to comment on the clouds.  When I set up this shot I had it in mind that I would just photoshop the clouds in later.  It turns out I didn’t have to.  The damn dropcloth that goes over the top of the product table kept falling down.  After a few minutes I said, “to hell with it, I’ll just put it somewhere else.”  That’s when it hit me, my clouds kept falling right into place.  Yes, the clouds are a dropcloth that kept getting in the way.
